The origin of fashion design dates from 1826. The first fashion designer in the world from 1826 to 1895 is believed to have been Charles Frederick Worth. Charles, who used to be a draper, founded a fashion House in Paris. He started the trend of fashion houses and asked his customers which clothes were right for them.
During this time, a number of design houses began hiring the artists’ services to create garment patterns. Clients would be presented with patterns, which would then place an order if they liked it. It was during this period that the practice of providing designs to customers and then sewing them started, instead of the earlier method in which they would be presented with the finished garments.
At the beginning of the 20th century, new fashion developments would first take place in Paris, from where they would spread to the rest of the world. New clothing designs would come to life in Paris until they made their way to other parts of the world. Paris emerged as the ‘fashion capital,’ in other words. ‘Fashion’ was mostly ‘haute couture’ during this time, designed exclusively for individuals.
By the middle of the 20th century, fashion clothing had begun to be mass-produced. The bulk of production has increased, and people have begun to make more choices about clothing. By the end of the 20th century, fashion awareness among the people increased, and they began to choose clothes for themselves based on comfort and style, instead of relying on the trends that prevailed in the market.
